Principles for systems of variable traffic signs and devices for variable traffic information on the road infrastructure

The company CityPlan processed, as part of its research and development activities, these technical conditions on request of the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic.
Technical conditions “Principles for systems of variable traffic signs and devices for variable traffic information on the road infrastructure” (TP 141) have been approved by the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic on 20.12.2000 as preliminary under the reference no. 26871/00-120, with effect from 1.1.2001.

TP 141 specifies basic objectives and principles of usage, location and fitting of variable traffic signs and devices for traffic information on roads and determines conditions for designing, implementing and operating systems of variable traffic signs and systems of devices for traffic information.

TP 141 is divided into two parts. The first textual part consists of five chapters, which include:

• General description, terminology and importance of systems of variable traffic signs and devices for traffic information within ITS.
• Distribution and description of individual traffic management systems utilising variable traffic signs and devices for traffic information.
• Display technology, dimensions, location in the longitudinal course of a road, visual characteristics of variable traffic signs and devices for variable traffic information.
• Description of variable traffic signs for various types of systems of variable traffic signs and their relations to permanent traffic signs.
• Architecture of systems of variable traffic signs and devices for traffic information, recommendations for functional and physical structure of variable traffic signs, management centers and sub-centers.
• Operation and planning of systems variable traffic signs.

The second part of TP 141 contains graphic annexes, which include individual examples of technologies of variable traffic signs, their arrangements on roads, their combinations within linear and local traffic management and examples of systems of devices for traffic information.

TP 141 is primarily intended for:

• Authorities and bodies, which stipulate, approve or propose road traffic signs, including deployed variable traffic signs roads. (Mainly chapters 1, 2 and 3)
• Authorities and bodies, which propose or approve solutions for traffic management, or provide traffic management. (Mainly chapters 4 and 5 addressing conditions and relations of systems of variable traffic signs, their reliability and integrity)
