The publication was processed as part of the project "Application of Transport Logistic Approaches in Urban Areas" funded from financial resources designated for research and development projects of the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic. The publication is intended in particular for professional public dealing with transport improvements in urban areas. One of the tools for transport improvements is application of logistics on city needs, together with planning, designing, implementing and operating Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The publication is divided into thematic chapters describing basic approaches and successful applications of logistics and implementation of ITS technologies to transport systems of cities.
The publication is divided into the following chapters:
The chapters “Advantages of transport planning for cities” and “Advantages of application of logistics for cities” introduce basic concepts and approaches of solutions for cities and their surroundings. The chapter “Intelligent transport technologies and their overview” provides basic overview of possible applications of telematic systems in transport and their benefits. The chapter "Implementation of ITS and logistics in public transport” examines more closely ITS applications covering needs of public transport. The chapter "Examples of cities" presents the transport strategy of the city of London and the city of Glasgow divided into three parts: network management, network development and network maintenance. It gives a comprehensive view of the real application. The chapter "Pilot projects" reveals relevant comprehensive information resources, contained in projects of the European Union. A similar objective has the chapter "Successful solutions", which describes other significant information sources in terms of worldwide and European congresses of ITS. It presents specific conclusions reached during realisation of projects in various cities and regions throughout the world. The chapter "One must begin" is based on experience of organizations engaged in realisation of ITS in the USA and in Europe. It presents overview of issues of ITS planning, obtaining support, developing and implementing ITS. The chapter "Literature and references" includes a dictionary of abbreviations and English terminology from ITS with Czech interpretation. This dictionary was created on the basis of materials from ITS congresses held in Seoul and Orlando in order to help readers to easily familiarize terms and expressions relating to ITS.
The publication consists of 180 full-color pages of A4 format with photos, diagrams and graphic examples of high-quality coated paper.
