The main objective of the research was to verify impacts of road conditions on traffic accidents and their consequences, and to create functioning system for collection and evaluation of parameters relating to road safety. It was necessary to build on the existing practice of surveys of accident locations, in particular on long operating road sections with insufficient safety level. The project was primarily focused on how infrastructure contributes to occurrence of traffic accidents and their serious consequences. This issue is being in a long term neglected and almost all efforts for prevention and repression deal with road users (drivers, pedestrians and cyclists), technical conditions and safety of vehicles. Drivers are obliged to obtain the driving licence, follow traffic rules; they are systematically controlled and repressed. Vehicles are tested during the development stage, they must comply with specific technical and safety conditions and they are equipped with crush zone, bars, airbags, electronic systems, etc. to ensure their safe operation. Safety evaluation is provided by the independent testing safety system EuroNCAP, which has significant impact on customers and thus also on vehicle manufacturers. Currently, safety characteristics of vehicles become parameters of their quality and an important factor influencing selection of a vehicle type by customers. Final outputs of the project included:
